We have very little information about Lönnrot's eighth field trip, the purpose of which was to collect lyric songs, romances and ballads, which would later be compiled into the Kanteletar. Lönnrot's companion on the trip was his friend C.H. Ståhlberg, and their destination was Finnish Karelia. There are no notes on the part of the trip that took them through Kainuu.

The most significant thing that happened on the trip was that Lönnrot met Mateli Kuivalatar in Ilomantsi.
