The city hall is one of the few buildings in Kajaani that have been preserved since Lönnrot´s days. It was built in the early 1830´s with financial contribution from the Grand Duke, Aleksandr I. Drawings for the hall were made by the architect Carl Ludvig Engel, who created the monumental centre in Helsinki, the most famous architect in Finland at his time.
