One year after getting married in 1850, Lönnrot built himself a house
in Kajaani, it was the biggest house in town at that time. After many
thoughts of moving, Lönnrot had at last made up his mind to settle in
Kajaani for the rest of his life. In 1853 however, Lönnrot was offered
a professorship of Finnish language at the University of Helsinki and
in January 1854 he moved to the capital. Lönnrot's house was demolished
in 1968 and a store house, labelled by the citizens, as the ugliest house
in Kajaani, was built in it's place. |
