The aim of the Viena Karelian
folklore village project

The
aim of the Viena Karelian folklore village project is to preserve
and support Viena Karelian culture. In practice, this means:
- Ensuring the survival of the vernacular language by
establishing Karelian language kindergartens and schools; by increasing
the number of Karelian language radio and television programs;
Karelian language publications; and promoting and supporting the
dialetct as a home language.
- Preserving architectural traditions by protecting and
restoring the traditional milieu and restoring historical buildings
as well as building new traditional houses.
- Cherishing the unbroken tradition of handicraft.
- Building monuments and museums.
- Reviving traditional folklore festivals.
- Ensuring the survival of previously deserted but now revitalised
villages by providing electricity and repairing the roads.
- Preserving the original nature surrounding the villages.
The means to achieving the ends of the project are as follows:
- The remigration (and repatriation) of the original inhabitants
and their descendants and supporting requirements for agriculture.
- Making use of handicraft traditions.
- Organizing international cultural tourism to the folklore village
areas and.
- Acquiring financial aid from Karelian, Russian and Finnish authorities
and other international organizations, such as the EU and cultural
foundations
