The aim of the Viena Karelian
folklore village project

 
The aim of the Viena Karelian folklore village project is to preserve and support Viena Karelian culture. In practice, this means:
  1. Ensuring the survival of the vernacular language by establishing Karelian language kindergartens and schools; by increasing the number of Karelian language radio and television programs; Karelian language publications; and promoting and supporting the dialetct as a home language.
  2. Preserving architectural traditions by protecting and restoring the traditional milieu and restoring historical buildings as well as building new traditional houses.
  3. Cherishing the unbroken tradition of handicraft.
  4. Building monuments and museums.
  5. Reviving traditional folklore festivals.
  6. Ensuring the survival of previously deserted but now revitalised villages by providing electricity and repairing the roads.
  7. Preserving the original nature surrounding the villages.


The means to achieving the ends of the project are as follows:

  1. The remigration (and repatriation) of the original inhabitants and their descendants and supporting requirements for agriculture.
  2. Making use of handicraft traditions.
  3. Organizing international cultural tourism to the folklore village areas and.
  4. Acquiring financial aid from Karelian, Russian and Finnish authorities and other international organizations, such as the EU and cultural foundations
