Although
Vuokinsalmi is located in the Republic of Karelia and is administered
by the city council of the Kostamoksha, it is presented here in
connection with the villages of Hietajärvi and Kuivaniemi, because
the three form an indivisible whole.
Vuokinsalmi Strait lies on the eastern shore of Lake Hietajärvi
and is within sight and earshot of the village of Hietajärvi in
Finland. There is no longer a village at that location, however.
Like its sister village across the late, Vuokinsalmi, it was never
very large. According to the 1905 census, it had 12 houses and 94
inhabitants. Yet the village has given the world two significant
bards: Domna
Huovinen, who married and moved to Kuivajärvi, and Anni Denisov,
who worked in Paahkomienvaara before going as a young bride to Tollonjoki.
