The Hövelö house in Paltaniemi is the place, where Lönnrot put the finishing touches to the manuscript of the Old Kalevala late in 1834 and where he wrote the preface, which he undersigned the 28 of February, 1835. Lönnrot had bought Hövelö as his residence in December 1933. He himself moved into the house the following summer, but sold the house the next winter in January, as it was situated too far from his work place in Kajaani. However, he was permitted to remain in Hövelö until March.
